Virus = destructive software, designed to corrupt or destroy data.
I want to alert our customers about some facts pertaining to email viruses. It is safe to open an email, it's the email attachments that are potentially dangerous. If you are sent a file that ends with .exe, .bat, src, or .com the "safe" thing to do is to delete the file UNLESS YOU ARE POSITIVE IT IS AN "OK" FILE. The viruses are being transmitted when these files are executed.
Another file that could be dangerous is a file that ends with .doc these files can have embedded "macros" in them...which are a series of commands that "execute" when the file is opened. This is how the "Mellisa" virus was spread, it was unknowingly sent to people who assumed it was a "safe" file because they knew the sender.
Please DO NOT think you are safe from all viruses just because you run a virus scan program, many people are lulled into a false sense of security because they run the software and poof there goes the data!
A Virus program is only as good as the latest virus update files which can be downloaded from the software vendors website. Even so, be careful and practice safe computing, you can update your software on a Monday and if a new virus is introduced on Tuesday. The software will not proctect you until "they" figure out how to clean the virus and add the new files to the update, which you then need to download. Please visit your Virus software vendor site on a regular basis to keep your software level current.
